Surender Solanki

Surender Solanki is a Delhi based freelance photojournalist. He has done his Post Graduate Diploma in Creative Photography from Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts and Communication in 2012-13. Just a year later, in 2014, he won "National Media Fellowship Award" for his photo documentary on "River Yamuna and the Decay of its Culture". He continues to do a systematic study on the origins of the river Yamuna and its changing face with a sharp focus on how the development taking place along its banks impact the relationship between people and the river.

His other ongoing project is on the "illegal sand mining" industry flourishing on the banks of the river. In this project, he is looking into the devastation the industry causes to the river, environment and lives of the villagers in that area which includes losing their children.

His latest work about the "Aftermath of the Delhi Riots" has won him "South Asia Photo Fellowship, 2020". The grief inflicted by the violence on families have also affected him deeply and chiselled his approach to his photo story. This experience has also motivated him to further study and document the lingering trauma of violence and its socio-political impact on the marginalised group in society. He borrows an in-depth understanding of the social issue from his activism days. But his curiosity to dig deeper and commitment to truth pushed him to the world of photojournalism and photo documentaries.
